Dear traveler
Welcome to Åland, an archipelago of 6,700 named islands and nearly 10,000 smaller ones, where you can relax with your family in a Nordic holiday playground where people come to cycle, kayak, sail, fish and swim in the cold Baltic Sea and warm up in saunas afterward.
The Åland Islands is an autonomous archipelago between Sweden and Finland in the northern part of the Baltic Sea. On the islands lives a predominantly Swedish-speaking people but Åland is an autonomous and monolingual Swedish region of Finland with its own flag.
Åland has a unique history. It was ceded to Russia by Sweden in 1809. In 1854, a combined British/French fleet took the islands, destroying the fortress. After that, the entire archipelago was demilitarized and remains so to this day.
About 27,500 people live in Åland today, with about 11,000 in the main town of Mariehamn.
The main industry of the islands has always been shipping and trade, so the Maritime Museum, the Museum Ship Pommern, and the Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn are worth seeing to understand the islands' fascinating maritime history.
Also worth a visit is the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum in Kastelholm where visitors can see what a typical island farm looked like around 1890. However, the big draw to Åland these days is its unspoiled nature and beautiful landscapes.
On midsummer's eve, Åland holds a massive and ancient celebration marking the longest day of the year.
There are also a wide range of excellent places to eat and many artists' studios to visit. The islands can be reached both from Stockholm and Turku as well as by small plane.

What do I need to hire a car in Åland Islands?

To book your car, all you need is a credit or debit card. When you pick the car up, you’ll need:

  • Your voucher / eVoucher, to show that you’ve paid for the car.
  • The main driver’s credit / debit card, with enough available funds for the car’s deposit.
  • Each driver’s full, valid driving licence, which they’ve held for at least 12 months (often 24).
  • Your passport and any other ID the car hire company needs to see.

Different car hire companies have different requirements, so please make sure you check the car’s terms and conditions as well.

How old do I have to be to rent a car?

For most car hire companies in Denmark, the age requirement is between 21 and 70 years old. If you’re under 25 or over 70, you might have to pay an additional fee.

What should I look for when I’m choosing a car?

  • Space: You’ll enjoy your rental far more if you choose a car with plenty of room for your passengers and luggage.
  • Fuel policy: Not planning on driving much? A Full to Full fuel policy can save you a lot of money.
  • Location: You can’t beat an ‘on-airport’ pick-up for convenience, but an ‘off-airport’ pick-up with a shuttle bus can be much cheaper.

Are all fees included in the rental price?

The vast majority of Rentalcars.com rentals include Theft Protection, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), local taxes, airport surcharges and any road fees.

You’ll pay for any ‘extras’ when you pick your car up, along with any young driver, additional driver or one-way fees – but we’ll explain any additional costs before you book your car (and taking your own child seats or GPS can be an easy way to reduce your costs).

For more details on what’s included, just check the Ts&Cs of any car you’re looking at.
